Option Delta: Price Sensitivity and Position Exposure

Delta estimates the premium change for a small move in the underlying. It also provides a local way to compare option exposure with shares, subject to changing conditions.

Read delta with its sign

A long conventional call generally has positive delta; a long put has negative delta. Shorting the option reverses the position’s sign. With per-share delta +0.55, a $1 stock rise gives an approximate $0.55 increase in a call’s premium if other inputs stay fixed.

Delta is a slope at current inputs. It does not mean the option returns 55%, that it moves $55 per share, or that a trade has a 55% chance of making money.

For a hypothetical call initially priced at $6, a $1 stock increase suggests a delta-only value near $6.55. For a put initially at $5 with delta −0.40, the same move suggests $4.60. Multiply a per-share change by 100 for one standard contract; spreads and other factors affect a realizable sale price.

Translate to position exposure

Two long calls with delta +0.55 have local share-equivalent exposure of about +110 shares. If a position also includes 100 short shares, net delta is approximately +10 shares at that instant. The options still have other sensitivities, and the hedge can drift as price changes.

A single short put with delta −0.40 on the long-contract quote has position delta +40 shares after multiplying by −1 contract and 100. Directional labels such as “put” therefore cannot tell you the sign of the whole position without long or short information.

Keep sensitivity separate from probability

Delta is sometimes used as a rough proxy for the chance of expiring in the money under model assumptions. It is not generally identical to that probability, and neither quantity is the probability of profit after the premium and costs.

For a $100 call bought at $6, expiration profitability begins above $106 before costs, while being in the money begins above $100. That gap alone shows why “in the money” and “profitable” cannot be substituted for one another. Gamma explains why the slope itself moves.

Check your understanding

What is the approximate share-equivalent delta of one short put whose quoted long delta is −0.40?

Show the explanation

Positive 40 shares: −1 contract × 100 shares × −0.40. The sign reversal is essential; this is a local sensitivity, not ownership of 40 shares.
