Value vs. Growth Investing

Value approaches emphasize price relative to measures of business value or fundamentals. Growth approaches emphasize the potential expansion of a business. These styles can overlap, and neither a low multiple nor rapid growth establishes an attractive investment by itself.

Price and business prospects belong in both approaches

A value screen might compare price with earnings, book equity or cash flow. A growth screen might examine revenue or profit expansion. Different managers and index providers define those measures differently, so style labels do not create identical portfolios.

A growing business can be purchased at a modest valuation, and a slow-growing one can trade at a demanding price. The everyday terms value and growth are useful categories but not mutually exclusive laws of business.

A low multiple can reflect a real problem

Fictional Company A trades at $20 with current EPS of $4, a P/E of five. Company B trades at $40 with EPS of $2, a P/E of twenty. A looks cheaper on that single trailing measure. If A’s profits are temporarily elevated and later decline, the ratio may have been an unreliable guide.

B’s higher multiple might reflect an expectation of durable growth—or an expectation that proves too optimistic. The comparison requires an assessment of earnings quality, future prospects and risk. Neither denominator supplies that assessment automatically.

Two different ways an appealing story can fail

A value trap occurs when apparent cheapness accompanies a deteriorating business or a mistaken valuation measure. A growth disappointment occurs when the future expansion needed to support the price does not arrive, or arrives less profitably than expected.

A business may grow sales while needing so much investment or issuing so many shares that per-share outcomes disappoint. Conversely, a mature business may generate substantial distributable cash despite modest growth. Business scale, profitability and price have to be considered together.

Read style results over a stated window

When a report says growth led value, identify the actual indexes or funds and their methodology. Their sector weights, size exposures and rebalance rules can explain part of the difference. A style comparison is not an exchange-wide count of investors’ beliefs.

Historical leadership can reverse. Evaluating a method requires understanding its rationale, implementation, costs and failure conditions rather than choosing the label that performed best recently. The academy’s purpose is to make those comparisons legible, not declare a permanent winning style.

Check your understanding

A company has a P/E of five. Has that established it is undervalued?

Show the explanation

No. Earnings may be temporarily high, deteriorating or measured in a way that makes the ratio misleading. Low price relative to one metric is a starting observation.
